Book reviews — August 1972

A Guide to Industrial Archaeology in Exeter. Michael Chitty
1971. Obtainable at 18-gp from Prof. W.E. Minchington, Dept. of Economic History, University of Exeter, Rennes Drive, Exeter, EX
An excellent booklet which be invaluable reading, if only to show how much can be discovered in a relatively small area and an attractive foretaste of our visit on October 14th. The script is in the sequence of a circular walk (clearly shown on an included street map) into which considerable detail is crammed on everything from breweries to the Turkish baths, gas meter factory and ship canal warehouses. Any possible demolition threat or recent ownership changes are noted.

Tide Mills of Devon And Cornwall
Booklet. 1972. Obtainable at 30p from University of Exeter, as the above item
Gives all known sites and present remains.

The Vanished Hamlet. E.A. Bird.
15p or 20p including P & P from A.E. Bird, 29 King Edward Avenue, Rainham, Essex.
A well-produced booklet telling of the changes which occurred at Rainham Perry as it altered from remote hamlet to industrial complex. An interesting account of how dependent industries conglomerated on a riverside site over the years from 1870, produced in a very readable fashion.
